WATERFALL FILTERS

A waterfall filter is a molded rectangular tank filled with filter media that serves both as a pond filter and as the headwaters for a waterfall. The filter is normally dug into a hillside above the pond, but if the site is relatively flat, it can be set on the ground and earth from the pond excavation can be used to create a hillside around it.

OPERATION: Water is pumped through a bulkhead fitting into a distribution and settling chamber at the bottom of the filter. From there it flows upward through two layers of thick polyester filter matting and through several inches of filter rock. At the top of the filter is a lip onto which a wide flat rock is placed (if large flat stones are not available, ask us about synthetic waterfall stones). When the water reaches the lip it spills out of the filter to begin the waterfall.

SIZES: We offer three waterfall filters. Our standard waterfall filter (PF24DL, 27" x 25.5" x 25.5" high) is suitable for flow rates up to 5000 GPH, is made of thick black polyethylene, and has a 24" wide detachable lip that clamps rubber liners between the lip and the filter box. For very small ponds we offer a black polyethylene waterfall filter (PF14P, 20.5" x 15" x 18" high) suitable for flow rates up to 2000 GPH with a 14" wide integral lip and liner retention frame that clamps the liner to the filter box. For large ponds that require large waterfalls, we offer a very thick molded polyethylene filter (PF40P, 42" x 52" x 30" high) suitable for flow rates up to 15,000 GPH with a 40" wide integral lip and liner retention frame that clamps the liner to the filter box. Nylon mesh filter bags supplied with the filters– two with the standard filter, one with the small filter, and six with the large filter– can be filled with our super-efficient ceramic filter rock or with locally available lava rock.

INSTALLATION: The liner is clamped to the filter box with the detachable lip or liner retention frame. Soil or sand should be firmly packed around the sides and back of the filter until the top edges are flush with the surrounding terrain. Then all sides of the box are carefully concealed with rocks. Nylon mesh filter bags are filled with our super-efficient ceramic filter rock (25 pounds of rock per bag), and placed on the filter matting. If desired, containers with aquatic plants can be set on top of the rock bags to further conceal the edges and supplement filtration.
