GATE VALVES: Our gray PVC gate valves are recommended for controlling water flow rates in pumping and filtration systems. They are called gate valves because a wedge-shaped internal plastic barrier, called a "gate", rises and falls as the handle is turned. Since several full rotations are required to open or close a gate valve, they can accurately regulate flow rates from zero to full flow and will maintain the set flow rate without drifting. We stock 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", and 2" sizes with either female threads or pipe sockets.

BALL VALVES: Our gray PVC ball valves are recommended for on/off water flow control in pumping and filtration systems. They are called ball valves because a spherical plastic ball with a hole in the center rotates as the handle is turned. When the hole in the ball is aligned with the axis of the valve, water flows through the valve; when the hole in the ball is set perpendicular to the axis of the valve, water flow is blocked. Since it only takes a 90° turn to change from the fully open to the fully closed positions, ball valves are ideal for on/off flow control but are not recommended for flow-rate control.

Our ball valves offer industrial valve features that make them ideal for pond use. They have integral unions on both ends, simplifying installation and permitting easy removal for service. The ball rotation pressure can be easily adjusted by uncoupling the unions and turning the internal ball retainer ring with the removable valve handle. All sizes have full-port balls which means the holes through the balls are the same size as the inside of the pipes that connect to the valve, minimizing pressure loss. In comparison, most ball valves commonly available from home centers do not have unions, are not adjustable or serviceable, and often have reduced ports. We stock 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", and 3" sizes with either female threads or pipe sockets.

KNIFE VALVES: Knife valves control water flow with a thin flat plate– a "knife"– that is opened and closed by pulling or pushing a "T"-shaped handle. Since they can be rapidly operated, they are ideal for filter drain lines that must only be opened for a few seconds. Large knife valves are available at a reasonable price, so they are often used in the bottom-drain lines feeding vortex filters and skimmer tanks. Our knife valves are made of gray PVC and have locking mechanisms to reduce the likelihood of accidental opening. We offer standard duty 1.5" and 2" valves and heavy duty 3" and 4" valves.

THREE-WAY ROTATING VALVES: Three-way rotating valves have a single inlet and two outlets. Although the total water flowing through the valve cannot be regulated, the proportion of water that flows through each outlet can be rapidly and accurately adjusted from 0 to 100% simply by turning a large handle that rotates an internal barrier to block or unblock the two outlets. Once the optimal flow distribution has been determined, a locking thumb screw sets the handle position. Our rotating valves are made of dark gray PVC with built-in 2" socket unions. Adapters are available to convert one, two, or all three ports to 1-1/2" socket or 1-1/2" threaded connections. The sealing system is very reliable and easily serviced.

CHECK VALVES: Check valves allow water to flow in only one direction in a hose or pipe. When pumping from a pond to a filter situated higher than the pond, a check valve should be used to prevent the filter from siphoning dry when the pump is disconnected for maintenance, or if there is a power failure. Check valves are also required on the intake lines to external pumps. For aquatic gardening it is important to use only full flow swing check valves– named for their internal flaps that swing completely out of the way in operation– and not the easily-clogged spring check valves designed for use with drinking water.

For low pressure pumps in skimmers and intake lines to external pumps, we recommend our sturdy black ABS full-flow swing-check valves in 1-1/4" and 2" sizes with spigot ends. For easy disassembly for cleaning they should be attached with flexible connectors. For most other applications we recommend our clear plastic check valves which are available with either socket or female unions in 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 3", and 4" sizes.
