BUTYL POND LINERS

The PondTechnology Division of Resource Conservation Technology is the only fabricator of pond-grade Butyl rubber in the United States. PondTechnology Butyl is made from the same premium synthetic Butyl rubber recommended by leading European water gardening experts. It has been field tested for more than thirty years in hundreds of thousands of installations throughout the world, varying in size from 25 square-foot garden ponds to 4,000,000 square-foot water-storage reservoirs. It is remarkably flexible and conformable; it is safe for all aquatic life; it withstands exposure to arctic cold and desert heat; and it will last longer than any other flexible liner underwater or underground. Although PondTechnology Butyl costs more than other synthetic rubbers, its superior performance makes it the liner of choice for projects that demand the very best liner available.

FORMULATION: PondTechnology Butyl is fabricated from a unique Butyl rubber formulation optimized for pond-liner use. It differs from other Butyl rubbers commonly used for commercial waterproofing in four important ways: it is completely safe for fish and plants; it contains some EPDM polymer for superior durability in exposed applications; it has a talc-free surface for easy handling and attractive appearance; and it can be factory seamed with a high-strength hot-bonding process.

LIFETIME: We warrant PondTechnology Butyl liners for thirty years, subject to certain limitations (see written warranty for details). Extensive field experience suggests that they will last longer than fifty years in protected underwater or underground environments. Other liners may claim to last as long as PondTechnology Butyl, but none have the track record to prove it.

THICKNESS: PondTechnology Butyl liners are available in 30 mil and 40 mil thickness. For irregular free-form garden ponds, particularly those smaller than 2500 square feet, 30 mil Butyl is the best choice: no other pond liner is more supple and elastic, and none can be installed with so few folds. Larger projects should be lined with 40 mil Butyl for enhanced resistance to abuse since the thicker sheet offers significantly greater strength with only a little loss of flexibility.

APPEARANCE: The talc-free process used to manufacture PondTechnology Butyl gives it a slightly textured surface with a flat-black color (some traces of fiber from the fabric layering material used in manufacturing may be visible).

REPAIRS AND SEAMS: Holes in PondTechnology Butyl rubber can be permanently patched with our self-adhesive repair tapes; stream and waterfall liners can be easily joined to pond liners with our self-adhesive seam tapes. Although we advise against field seaming pond liners unless the project is too large to be lined with a single sheet of rubber, durable seams can be made by using a combination of seam tape and repair tape.

PACKING AND HANDLING: All PondTechnology Butyl liners are supplied in sturdy boxes, accordion-folded in both directions. The rubber weighs approximately 0.2 pounds per square foot in 30 mil thickness and 0.3 pounds per square foot in 40 mil thickness. When ordering a large liner, be prepared to take the box or roll off the delivery truck and move it to the site since the delivery company will not do this for you. Position the box at one corner of the pond, either on the surrounding land or within the pond. Carefully open the box to see how the rubber is folded and then orient the box in the proper direction. After checking the site to make certain there are no sharp objects that could snag the liner, unfold the liner into a long strip beside or into the pond and then pull the liner carefully across the pond, flipping it slightly to force air under the liner to help it float into place.

30 MIL AND 40 MIL BUTYL CUSTOM FLAT SHEETS: We can quickly fabricate custom flat sheets from 5 to 5,000 square feet in 30 mil or 40 mil Butyl, or a combination of the two thicknesses. In addition to simple rectangles, we can make almost any shape that can be drawn as a series of 5'6" strips of rubber, such as those shown below, provided the length measured along the strips is less than 55 feet. Larger sizes are possible with sufficient advance notice. Although custom sizes cost slightly more per square foot than standard sizes, they often save money by eliminating waste.

30 MIL AND 40 MIL BUTYL CUSTOM THREE-DIMENSIONAL LINERS: Where folds are not acceptable, such as for formal reflecting ponds, we can fabricate three-dimensional rectangular liners with vulcanized corners. We can also fabricate three-dimensional L-shapes and cylinders, but these can be very expensive and may require long lead times. The walls of the pond must be accurately formed of wood, masonry, or concrete: three-dimensional liners cannot be used with soil or stone walls.
If the liner is to be wrapped over the top of the pond walls, order the liner at least six inches taller than the pond. Cut four small round holes corresponding to the top corners of the pond walls as shown. Then slit the corners to make four side flaps.
When the flaps are folded over the rim of the pond, there is a notch at each corner where there is no rubber. This can be filled in with a small square of uncured repair tape. Clean the rubber with our cleaner/primer or with naptha, position the tape so that it hangs over the pond two inches, and form the tape downward into the corner (the tape is stretchable).
A three-dimensional rectangular can also be fastened directly to the wall of the pond. Mark a line approximately one-quarter inch above the planned water level. Cut and fasten our black termination bars just below the line using the screws provided (if fastening to masonry, use plastic inserts). Mark the ends of the bars and remove them. Clean the wall and apply our termination bar tape below the line but leave the release tape in place. Position the liner, making certain that it extends completely into the bottom corners of the pond so that it will not stretch when the pond is filled with water. Then remove the release paper and carefully press the liner into the tape. Finally, re-attach the termination bars.
