BACTERIA
Without bacteria, ponds would rapidy turn into pool of green slime where no fish or plants would survive. Bacteria are an essential part of the nitrogen cycle, the bio-chemical process in which organic matter is broken down into its basic components to be recycled into the environment. Although bacteria are present in all ponds, adequate quantities of the most effective bacteria are not always present when they're needed the most. By supplementing the natural bacterial population, it's often possible to solve algae problems and eliminate excess organic matter that collects at the pond bottom. Specialized bacteria can also play a role in insect control in ponds by killing insect larvae. |
| BIOLOGICAL CLARIFIER: We recommend monthly application of Biological Clarifier, a dry bacteria and enzyme mixture that helps to break down accumulated fish waste, leaves, and other organic pond debris. A 12 ounce bottle will treat ponds up to 2000 gallons for a year, and a 25 pound pail will treat ponds up to 300,000 gallons for a year.

| MICROBE LIFT: This is a mature bacterial colony in liquid form that grows rapidly to consume excess nutrients in pond water, thereby starving the algae of their food. Consequently, it can often eliminate green water problems in just a few days. It's also recommended for new ponds to jump-start biological filters. Use a 16 oz bottle for ponds up to 500 gallons, a 32 oz bottle for ponds from 500 to 1000 gallons, two 32 oz bottles for ponds from 1000 to 10,000 gallons, and a 128 oz bottle for ponds up to 25,000 gallons.
We also offer several variations of Microbe Lift optimized for particular pond problems. Spring Cleaner and Autumn Prep accelerate the breakdown of organic material that accumulates in ponds in the autumn and winter. | CLARITY MAX: To solve really difficult water quality problems – such as uncontrolled growth of string algae – we suggest Clarity Max Plus. We can't guarantee it will work in every situation, but it's one of the most promising products we've seen. Use a 9 oz bottle for ponds up to 500 gallons, and a 40 oz bottle for ponds from 500 to 4000 gallons. Ten 40 oz bottles will treat ponds up to 300,000 gallons.

| MOSQUITO CONTROLS: Bacillus thuringiensis, often abbreviated as Bt, is a naturally occurring bacteria that paralyzes the digestive tract of insect larvae, causing them to die within a few days. Biological Mosquito Control Donuts float on the surface of ponds and slowly release a specific strain of this bacteria. Biological Mosquito Control Granules are a rapid-release granular form of the same product. Biological Mosquito Control Liquid is a highly-concentrated form of the same bacteria. Although bacillus thuringiensis is not suspected to cause any environmental side effects, we suggest you use it sparingly to minimize the possibility that mosquitos will eventually become resistant.

| BARLEY STRAW: For centuries farmers have thrown bales of barley straw into ponds to control algae, since as the straw decomposes it emits a natural algal growth inhibitor. We supply mini-bales of real Scottish barley measuring 4" x 4" x 7". One bale treats 500 gallons of water for a year. Insert the bales into the mesh bags provided and place them near flowing water where there is plenty of oxygen, such as near the base of a waterfall.
